Bronchitis Q&A

What is bronchitis?

Bronchitis is a condition characterized by inflamed bronchial tube lining. Your bronchial tubes are an important part of your respiratory system; they circulate air to and from your lungs.

If you have a bad cough accompanied by thick mucus, you may have bronchitis, which has a range of other symptoms, depending on its severity. Bronchitis can be temporary or it can be a long-standing problem.

Temporary, or acute, bronchitis usually starts off as a respiratory infection like a cold. Chronic bronchitis, on the other hand, is typically a complication from another illness or a lifestyle choice like smoking.

For your condition to be chronic, your symptoms must be present for at least three months over a period of two years.

What are the common symptoms of bronchitis?

Some of the most common symptoms of bronchitis, at different stages and intensities, include:

  • Coughing
  • Clear, white, yellowish gray, green, or blood-streaked mucus
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Low-grade fever
  • Slight chills

What are the causes of bronchitis?

Every case of bronchitis is different. Typically, chronic bronchitis is a consequence of smoking or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Common causes of acute bronchitis include viruses, air pollution, and exposure to toxic substances and/or allergens like dust.

You’re also more susceptible to bronchitis if you have frequent bouts of acid reflux and/or heartburn, or weakened or young immune system.

When should I see a doctor about bronchitis?

If your symptoms have lasted longer than three weeks, you should book an appointment at CPI Physicians. In addition, keep an eye out for any of these more serious symptoms:
